On the error exponent of variable-length block-coding schemes over finite-state Markov channels with feedback

چکیده
The error exponent of Markov channels with feedback is studied in the variablelength block-coding setting. Burnashev’s [5] classic result is extended and a single letter characterization for the reliability function of finite-state Markov channels is presented, under the assumption that the channel state is causally observed both at the transmitter and at the receiver side. Tools from stochastic control theory are used in order to treat channels with intersymbol interference. In particular the convex analytical approach to Markov decision processes [4] is adopted to handle problems with stopping time horizons arising from variable-length coding schemes.

Exponential bounds on error probability with Feedback
Feedback is useful in memoryless channels for decreasing complexity and increasing reliability; the capacity of the memoryless channels, however, can not be increased by feedback. For fixed length block codes even the decay rate of error probability with block length does not increase with feedback for most channel models. Consequently for making the physical layer more reliable for higher laye...
متن کاملVariable-length codes for channels with memory and feedback: error-exponent upper bounds
The reliability function of memoryless channels with noiseless feedback and variable-length coding has been found to be a linear function of the average rate in the classic work of Burnashev. In this work we consider unifilar channels with noiseless feedback and study upper bounds for the channel reliability function with variable length codes. In unifilar channels the channel state is known to...
متن کاملExtrinsic Jensen-Shannon Divergence: Applications to Variable-Length Coding
Abstract—This paper considers the problem of variable-length coding over a discrete memoryless channel (DMC) with noiseless feedback. The paper provides a stochastic control view of the problem whose solution is analyzed via a newly proposed symmetrized divergence, termed extrinsic Jensen–Shannon (EJS) divergence. It is shown that strictly positive lower bounds on EJS divergence provide non-asy...
متن کاملAsymptotic Expansion and Error Exponent of Two-Phase Variable-Length Coding with Feedback for Discrete Memoryless Channels
This paper studies variable-length coding with noiseless feedback for discrete memoryless channels. Yamamoto and Itoh’s two-phase scheme achieves the optimal error-exponent, but due to the block-coding nature it is not optimal in the expansion of the message size logM . Polyanskiy et al. showed that with feedback, the back-off from capacity is logarithmic in the expected latency l. The O(log l)...
متن کاملError-and-Erasure Decoding for Block Codes with Feedback
Shannon showed in [18] that the capacity of discrete memoryless channels (DMCs) does not increase even when a noiseless and delay free feedback link exists from receiver to transmitter. Moreover on symmetric DMCs the sphere packing bound is an upper bound for the error exponent of fixed-length block-codes, as shown by Dobrushin1 in [5]. Thus relaxations like error-and-erasure decoding or variab...
